To Craig from Jorge:
After consulting with my pillow I think I can spot
where did I fall into the trap in yesterday's digest.
It was in this section of the dialogue (quote):
N. If so, why don't you have a name for them, instead
of just calling them "things"
J: Because they are things like any other things!!!
N. But you implied they weren't. You said you had many
examples of things 'like these' which must mean that
you know as many examples of things which' are not
like these". So
N introduces (cleverly) the suggestion that, because
of being "many things like these" it necessarily
implies that there must be many examples of " things
not like these".
I shouldn't have admitted to that since the initial
premise was that all things are SPOVs ( hence there
can not be things which 'are not like' SPVO's) .
Looking in retrospect I'd say it was a clever trap.
We were talking of a particular set of things in which
the features we associate with the now defunct word
'pattern' are clearly discernible. From the
particular he went to the general (the SPOVs).
The general: [ all things ] = [ all SPOVs] , must
include all those things which clearly display all
those features we associate with the (defunct) word
'pattern' plus all those things we call patterns
without knowing why.
=====
Once circularity resolved, could we agree on
doing away with the words patterns or pretzels, etc.
and use, instead of SPOV, STOV (static things of
value)?
Could we go one step forward?
Since all 'things' are STOVs , there would be no need
for the word 'static'? It is redundant.
And even one step more: Since all 'things'
are 'things of value' could we drop the 'of value'
part? Having dispensed of SPOVs , we then dispense
of STOVs and we are left with the proposition:
[ all things] = [ all things ]
which is perfectly logical.
