Arlo, 1) I agree with you that the military and police should be socialized. (Though body guards or private security should be allowed, they should be limited to self-protection.) Also citizens can be forced to support these socialized functions. 2) Also I agree that society as a whole should own scarce natural resources like land, water, air, etc. Also citizens can be forced to support these or to pay use fees. 3) Government libraries are another matter. We could investigate their consequences: are people better educated, do they become too dependent on government, is there resentment on the part of those who are forced to support them, would book co-operatives be better? But for me these considerations are secondary to this: who should have the say in what is done the the money that goes to government libraries? Me or the government.
