Hi SA, (se the Ian / "me" thread too) One can seem too open for some people's tastes, and the individual exposing aspects of themselves is (a) taking personal risks in the community, and (b) in danger of bringing in material that seems "off topic", indulgent ego-driven even, to some participants.
As I say, for me there is no such thing as "off topic", provided we respect each other and our motives for being here. From the "off topic subjects" we learn more about the participants and their on-topic arguments - and their joined-up multiple personalities. I'm all for maximum openness, we all learn faster (see Platt's post on Switzerland). You can be too open, only in terms of the downside of the risk to yourself - I doubt many such risks arise on here - except for those whose personal lives are not anonymous in public arenas beyond this forum. Then, risks do need to be "calculated" - (which draws the opposite accusation of hypocrisy - but that's real life - and another story.)
