[Platt] > To assume germs and electrons are not conscious offers nothing in the way of > explanatory power either. Suppose we suspend by a string, 2 bar magnets, opposite ends labelled N & S. The N end of one magnet rotates toward the S end of the other. What options for understanding this are there: 1) The N particles value proximity to the S particles (&/or vice versa). 2) A third thing--magnetic force--forces the N particles toward the S particles. (This pushes the explanation back a level: what explains how a magnetic force does this.) 3) There is no explanation--all we can say is: that's what happens when the ends are magnetized. Can anyone think of any other options?
