[Marsha to David] Very well stated!!! [Arlo] Agree, David. Well stated.
[Marsha to David] I do love this country. I love the mountains, plains, valleys, rivers, lakes, trees, flowers, etc. & etc. It's a beautiful place to be. [Arlo to Platt] As for Sowell, whose right-wing delusions against a global leftist cabal and paranoiac frets over a vast conspiracy of the dreaded "intelligensia" to squelch freedom and banish liberty, well... who can be surprised by his spin on this? Sounds like the Limbaugh monologue du jour. These are the people who, after all, tell the American public on a regular basis that democrats (the "radical left") "hate our troops" and "want to see dead American soldiers", conspire against liberty and actually "hate America". One would think that on a day of festive national independence such polarizing bullshit would be absent from the conversation, but when you see "reds under every bed", I guess its hard to let that fear go. And when your entire political edifice is built on the rhetoric not only of "fear" but of passing conspiratorial delusions about an "international leftist cabal of academics and intelligensia who hate freedom", then I'm sorry to say that, in my humble opinion, you shame America and what on this day we should remember it stands for. I agree with Marsha. I love America. From the trail of BBQ to the cajun dishes to Boston's chowders and Cali's Napa Wines. Whether I am traveling the "spiritual geography" of North Dakota or the Blue Ridge mountains of West Virginia, I am continually amazed by the wealth and richness of our landscape and the vitality and comraderie of her people (with the exception of those who, as Pirsig points out, bought into the hyped-up modern fuck-you culture). But I also love Germany, and have loved the people and geography and way of life of the Yucatan peninsula. This isn't a high-school football game, it is not "my team versus your team". No one wants to see "dead American soldiers", and no one wants "our troops defeated". I wonder if this nonsense will ever be behind us?
