Haven't been able to get to this yet Marsha (today goin' back and forth
between this and another project; been away for four days too, so, lots to do),
but I do know much about how the government looked for anything to get those
people out of there. That story is twisted. Something about promised land,
rumors of gold, fear - fear is the stench of many westererns - and an outright
promise in Congress I believe, but the president went and did his own thing. I
can't remember the details on that last part, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Did you know the Seminoles were never pushed west? There have been other
Trail of Tears. A big one occurred in the north in PA, Ohio, and maybe
Illinois were the gov't made them march west. We know of the marches the
western tribes were forced to make to reservations. We may have all heard of
Sitting Bulls escape with many in the tribe into Canada, and the Canadians
received them well. Then, for some reason, the strange land and the missing of
the rest of their people, they went back south and entered a reservation,
turning themselves in. The Seminoles are still in the Flordia everglades. The
Cherokee are still in the Great Smokey Mountains, too.
