"They" say there are no atheists in foxholes but there was a recently returned 
veteran in my psychology of religion class who says otherwise. She was in Iraq 
and saw a whole range of people who had altered their religious beliefs after a 
traumatic event, a close-call in battle or some other near-death experience. 
She said reactions were about 50/50, which is to say half the people adopted a 
religious attitude and half the people lost whatever faith they had. And it 
seems like just about everybody who has seen combat up close will say that kind 
of experience changes a person. Clinging to the same old beliefs is just about 
the most unlikely thing that can happen in a foxhole.
