If as you seem to claim it's all just a fantasy, how is convention possible?
A convention is a form of agreement among different individuals. If there is
nothing external to you, who are you establishing conventions with? What
would these conventions be about?

I never used the word fantasy. I used the word illusion as in
mistaken. Convention is best represented as pattern, static patterns
of value which mistakenly postulate subjects and objects.
There was a time when the prevalent pattern was that the Earth was
the center of the Universe. This concept, pattern, was the
conventional belief, but it was mistaken. In like manner the
conventionally held belief is that self and objects are independent
entities. This is a mistake, an illusion.
I didn't say there was nothing external to me. I've said there is no
me (self) and there are no external independent objects. Thought,
thought being an operative word, are static patterns of value. The
spovs are conventional reality.

Setting that aside there may be societal conventions. But we adopt them as
individuals to the extent that we agree with them or that they are useful.
In science such conventions are held to be tentative and provisional. They
are recognized as being descriptions. They are not accepted or rejected just

beings, I'm not suggesting it be tossed into the trash heap. It is,
though, not TRUTH, not whole truth. A better world-view would be to
see not independent subjects and objects, but static patterns of
value. It is a better description. Static patterns of value are a
more dynamic, flexible way to understand reality.

authority? You do that a lot. You use the authority of science as
your argument instead of explanation. On the words of no one,
including the Royal Society. That leaves a collection of
ever-changing, interrelated and interconnected, inorganic,
biological, social and intellectual, static patterns of value
responding to Dynamic Quality.

understand, in spite of acculturation, that there are no independent
objects. And that entities exist by convention and are better

You can think that a pot is just an idea or a convention and that in the
absence of the idea there is nothing there if you like. I think that view
leads to nothing but confusion. I guess that settles it. If you were to say
that in the absence of a set of ideas and conventions a pot could not exist
I would agree. But I think of a pot as a collection of inorganic patterns
transformed by a set of mental patterns into a pot. Today we live in a world
that is almost entirely composed of such ideas given substance. But you seem
to want to take this further and say that in the absence of some idea or
convention nothing whatever exists where the pot was at could be shaped into
some other idea.

A pot is not an independent object in any sense of the word. A pot
is dependent on causes and conditions, which in turn are all
dependent on causes and conditions, which in turn are all dependent
on causes and conditions, etc., etc., etc... A pot is a collection
of attributes and parts, which are a collection of attributes and
parts dependent on causes and conditions, which are, in turn, a
collection of attributes and parts dependent on causes and
conditions, etc., etc., etc... All mental constructs, static
patterns of value. A pot is better understood as a process, as a
function.

I don't think your version is an improvement. For one thing I am puzzled at
how, from the point of view you express, you could ever find a plural for
the word subject. I also think that while self and thing are not independent
they are distinct parts of the process. This is how I can tell my ass from a
hole in the ground. I didn't used to think I was not unique in this but the
more I read here the more I question the qualitative nature of that personal
illusion.
Things are distinct parts of the process if you think that they
are. I think they conventionally seem that way, and there might be
some advantage to problem solving by acting as if they are, but they are not.
I'm relieved that you think you know your ass from a hole in the
ground. Now what was it that Lila suggested? Oh yes. You cannot
be wrong. Nobody holds what they believe to be false.
The self is an ever-changing, collection of interrelated and
interconnected, inorganic, biological, social and intellectual,
static patterns of value responding to Dynamic Quality .
