Craig, Matt, But that DVD is the re-mastered / re-edited TV produced version ? "Best for fans" undoubtedly, second only to the Radio recodings, scripts and the books themselves .... but my recommendation was not to a "fan". Though even fans argue about the editorial decisons.
I still say, for a feature length Hollywood potted-version, for people who are not fans or are otherwise unmoved by the originals, the film is actually surprizingly good, has some of the best "jokes" (well, not very funny thought provoking items) well produced with some great cast / characterizations - as Matt notes - (Bill Nihy as Slartibartfast is my fave). Clearly it only contains less barely 10% of the material in the "trilogy" (of 5 or more books) BTW The only thing significant about 42 in the story is (a) it's the answer to a question ... so it's "wrong" anyway, and (b) it's a number ... so it's "wrong" again. (It contains no truth, useful or fundamental.) The only answer I will entertain is the question "How many roads must a man walk down, before he can understand ... (the way a woman like Marsha understands) ... ?" Most of that "deep thought" gag is about "what is the question" ... rather than the answer ... and that particular gag is only one over-rated among thousands in the trilogy. (A typically memetic problem, because it is easy to remember ... a number, even though it is worthless.) (I think MEL is right ... anyone approaching it other than from a "Cambridge college / intellectual / footlights / elitist" angle ... could easily feel excluded.) Ian Trading answers for questions.
