Marsha, I have said so much about why Dawkins is an asshole, that I'm not sure I should lead any response to your question.
The nicest thing I said about him in my longest piece on the subject was. "Anyone who is a fan of DNA (Douglas N Adams) can't be all bad." He's an atheist, thorough scientific academic and public communicator, but he is an unreconstructed materialist, logical-positive, greedy-reductionist, objectivist, atomist, SOMist, scientist, and so dogmatic with it, that the immense irony of his dogma is entirely lost on him, not even an inkling ... the very antithesis of a MOQist. (Either that or he is so single-minded in his agenda, that he refuses to let any such chink in his armour see the light of day ... in which case he is very good at that too.) After God Delusion, please don't omit to read Harris (End of Faith) and Dennett (Breaking the Spell) & (Darwin's Dangerous Idea) if you haven't already. These people understand that the answer is just "Not science as we know it, Dawkins." On the positive note Marsha, you quoted Pirsig as saying ... "Metaphysics is a restaurant where they give you a thirty thousand page menu, and no food." You should also read Douglas N Adams "Restaurant and the End of the Universe" (2nd or 3rd ? in the "trilogy" of 5 or 8, none of which appears in the film.) If he were alive today, I would ask DNA if his title had anything to do with reading Pirsig, maybe even subliminally ? Sorry, gotta go, busy day.
