This is my first post and my last and only excuse.

I don't know who Ken Wilbur is or what school of thought he belongs to but I 
wonder what he or you would say about rubber tires. As far as I know, a rubber 
tire is a single gigantic molecule. I imagine one might construct a class of 
such whole-heapish objects and label it ... platypi?

No, Ham, Pirsigians do not believe rocks make conscious evaluations. You 
have conflated atoms and rocks. They are not the same. Ken Wilber makes the 
distinction clear: atoms are wholes, rocks are heaps. Wholes are entities 
like atoms, molecules and cells  They react to experience according to 
their level, inorganically or biologically. Rocks and other heaps like 
clouds, clothes and cars do not react to experience.
