Ham to Paul:
This religious mysticism is all very intriguing, although certainly not
rooted in the evolutionary hierarchy of Pirsig's thesis. Is it the product
of your personal intuition or does it reflect your thoughts on some
published source? You have us all mystified. I hope we don't have to wait
too long for an explanation of this teaser which appears to be the result of
an epiphany of some kind.

Andre:Hi Ham, Paul (liked your post) dmb and all,

Ham, What Paul wrote lies at the very core of Pirsig's evolutionary thesis.
Remember that the book which inspired Pirsig greatly is Northrop's 'The
Meeting of East and West'.
I suggest you have a good read of that (possibly thrice because it is
difficult) and you'll find similarities. Moreover you'll find at its
very core the unequivocal reality of the 'undifferentiated aesthetic
continuum', (Pirsig's Quality) and its 'differentiated aesthetic continuum'
(Pirsig's SQ).

A very challenging analysis of the different philosophies developed over the
centuries trying to make sense of the SQ whilst sometimes not, sometimes
half and sometimes 3/4 missing the link with DQ. All philosophies pretend to
know and claim the 'Good' , the 'Truth'. Whole societies having been and
being built upon and around these 'ideas' all claiming to be the Good (or at
least the vehicle towards this 'Good').

This has made it very difficult to sort out which is which. The relative
merit of one over the other. Many interpretations of the 'Good' are
circulating these days but fortunately most can be reduced to a few common
denominators.
Pirsig's contribution has been to sort out some of these conflicting,
contradictory 'ideas' by synthesizing some and dumping others placing and
sorting them in an evolutionary moral framework.
This framework has also presented us with sorting out priorities for action,
not necessarily on a political scale ( though this could be possible) but
simple,personal action.

It is suggested that 'Man is the measure of all things'. If I understand
Paul's post correctly we should respond to the undifferentiated aesthetic
continuum (not the differentiated) part of ourselves (which is not our 'I')
and work towards making Quality the measure of all things. And we do this
through our head, heart and hands.(ZMM)
