Marsha
I don't get into a 'the modern world sucks!' mood very often, but I'm
in one now, and it is times like these when it's best to work out in
the garden, count my breaths, and try to spare everyone my moaning
that a world-wide depression and a flu pandemic might just bring
everybody to their senses. There, I've confessed what a monster I am.

[Case]
When I get into a 'the modern world sucks!'
I try to think about two things that usually help.

First, I remember that the good old days sucked more.
Second, I hope that the world of my grandchildren will suck less.

I imagine that I exist suspended on a membrane
Whose surfaces tension divides remembrance and hope;
Indra's net of NOW.

On that membrane the flotsam and jetsam
Of "'this' and 'that'"
Are scattered "'here' and 'there' about me.

I surf the waves of Newton Rings;
Interference patterns of past and future.
"I" become a reflection;
The world in a glass, darkly.

In that frothy slur of time
I am pulled by strange attractors of Habit

Around me, illusions coalesce.
I pick at them like jelly beans
Or piles of M&Ms
With all the browns removed...

If we are to snack on Indra's jewels
Must we always suck the liquorish?
Can't we toss out out the brown ones ourselves?

Why must everyone always
Be brought to their senses
By famine and disease?
Can't hope and love change the world?
