Hi Platt, Though "why survive?" is an interesting question, evolutionary theory does not depend on an "urge to survive." In fact, it explains how an "urge to survive" gene would be passed on and survive while an "urge to self destruct" gene wold not be passed on and would die out. The important thing to keep in mind is that evolution operates at the level of the gene not the individual.
