We are living witness to every thing you mentioned. We live here in California's great central valley. What we brag about being the food basket of America. Unfortunately Factory farming has become the norm. Our dairies would be designated Super fund sites in 20 years or so. Salinity has built up on the west side rendering the land foul, and the water wars have begun. I came across a book years ago called 'Top Soil and civilization", the author was talking about a town in southern turkey near Syria called Antioch. He said that erosion was so bad in that part of the world, that when doing archeological excavations, they were discovering the floors of old dwellings that were 3 feet below the current water table.
