More thoughts, Ron, on Dr. DQ that occured while painting:

A doctorate from an unaccredited university is usually known as "diploma
mill". But if your true goal is learning, as opposed to status, you don't
care about such social disparagement.

However, using this freedom carries with it the responsibility to actually
make the degree meaningful and not just hand 'em out to any idiot who can
survive away from society for a year.

And on the other hand, for a person who is truly seeking, truly into
researching an idea, a sort of cloister away from all distractions where you
have nothing to do all day but talk to others in the community about your
ideas and compare, analyze and dissect is probably the ideal incubator for
the evolution of high quality ideas. Then, when the year is up and you have
access to writing materials and books, you can submit the evolved ideas to a
tribal-doctoral commitee which grants the degree. Thus you have to do more
than prove that you can live in a self-sufficient community apart from
western civilization, you have to prove you can come up with some original
ideas while doing so.

And a brief survey of historical movements shows us that nearly all great
intellectual or artistic evolution occurs in the context of a community like
this. I'm thinking of two recent examples, the Stanford Writer's group that
nurtured Kesey, McMurtry, Beagle and others and that English round table
that included CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien where they read each other's work and
commented and shared ideas. It is out of these human crucibles of commual
support that individual excellence is refined.
