Craig to Andre: There is a famous movie which discusses the philosophical question: should one use an electric blanket, since that prevents an authentic experience with reality. That movie is (you guessed it) "My Dinner with Andre". Craig????
Andre: Hi Craig, I am a bit thick sometimes, so I have no idea what you are talking about, but if it is some sort of reference to the food and the menu thing... ? Mr.Pirsig wrote (well, actually he suggests that he just followed DQ when writing LILA, but let's not quibble about finer details) a metaphysics of Quality. As Steve (I think) and Matt (I think) observed, the article 'a' is very important. It is not THE metaphysics in a traditional SOM sense. It is a metaphysics for people walking in the high country, for people who can't stay out of the fridge, for people that pick up girls in a bar, for people that are endlessly talking about it on a forum called the MD. It is a combination of dharma (biography) and universality (rta...cosmic order). It is not proscriptive. It doesn't tell you what to do or how to think but it does reflect 'order' . The static quality patterns of which it consists ( within an evolutionary 'framework') are meant to preserve the Dynamic Quality from which dharma and rta emerged. (needles to say 'contained within the levels). As Pirsig says in LILA referring to a chair being composed of dharmas, this statement is 'absolute jabberwocky to a conventional subject- object metaphysics'. But to look at Pirsig's metaphysics from a Quality perspective one sees that 'all static patterns are composed of value and that value is synonymous with morality'. A subject-object metaphysics gives you a 30.000 word menu and no food. A Quality metaphysics is a menu and you get what you ask for. Let DQ be the guide in your choice...through the heart, head and hands. Not sure if this makes sense but there you have it. Just trying my hand at DQ/SQ'ing. Cheers Andre Ps: stop picking on my electric blanket!!! You should know by now what inorganic and organic PoV's have 'made' possible.
