[Bo] But from MOQ's meta-level the true level context is seen, among other things that intelligence has been stable since "modern" man, but that intellect is a relatively recent phenomenon (its emergence identical to the events described in ZAMM as SOM) namely the 4th. level. For chrissake Dave in LILA Pirsig writes (something like this) "..In Homer's time the social level had not yet been transcended" I.e. the intellectual level had not manifested itself, and "Homer's time" is the AretĂȘ era and what transcended it was the intellectual level ...as SOM.
[Krimel] Look, intelligence has been stable since our clan separated from Homo Erectus. The intellectual level is made up of intellectual patterns. An intellectual pattern (an idea, a thoughts, a concept...) must persist over time. If it doesn't it is not a pattern. Language was the primary means of extending intellectual patterns in time for something like 150,000 years. During that time it was all stories around the campfire and plant lore and how to cook and how to build a hut, stuff like that. It's like you have Pirsig and Julian Jaynes confused in your head. Jaynes argued that consciousness or self awareness began in the time you keep harping on. He made this argument in the late '70 and almost no one but starry eyed seekers have taken it seriously. You have converted an interesting but dubious idea into something profoundly goofy. Homeric times seem striking because the work ascribed to him, like the Torah, spans the gap between oral traditions and writing. Writing is a tool that gives intellectual patterns greater extension in time. Writing is to the oral tradition as bronze is to flint. But all four are part of the intellectual level. We actual have terms in English that describes this radical shift; Historic and Prehistoric. This is not metaphysics or meta-anything else. It is an example of technology enabling profound lifestyle changes, nothing more.
