You know, Ron, Royce formulates a theory of international insurance to
mitigate war - a third party mediation that is self-interested in preventing
conflict, without taking particular sides.

He was mightily disappointed in Germany, though, just before he died.  And
Royce loved Germany, got his training in philosophy there, learned to speak
the language in a few months.   As things worked out, he had a good point
about the German betrayal of humanity.

And my reformulation of Santayana  wasn't specifically about war, but rather
the observable fact that by beholding we become changed.  What we look at is
what forms our values.  Focusing upon past mistakes does not in and of
itself rectify those mistakes but keeps us locked in negative patterns when
it might be more useful to just forget all about them and face the tomorrow
with hope born of ignorance.
