I was getting tired of the old one cuz it wasn't performing up to my specifications. For instance, I found myself drawn into academic intellectual wrangling over my head, promoting unacceptable and clashing philosophical view to no effect and no good purpose. Critical, cranky, looking for a fight and just generally being a contrarian that I inherently am. Or used to be, I should say. I'll offer a couple illustrations - my old response to Mary's suggestion to lay off the Royce was rude and abrupt and dismissive, I'll reply again and you can see the contrast between my old me and the newer version. And Ron, when I sat back and analyzed, I could see that I'd never get what I wanted from all that "stately personality" competition. The best I could possibly achieve would be proving *I* was right. But who else besides me cares about that? Without motivation there is no persuasion so that's a no-win situation. I remember some time ago, I replied to a comment dmb made about how funny I was, and I said basically, thanks for the compliment, but that's not exactly what I'd been goin' for here. It's like a stand-up comedian finishing his routine to dead silence, and afterward an audience member come up to him and says "Thanks, that was real thought-provoking". I guess if that's where it's going to go, I might as well aim for it, right? Then I'll feel some success at least when it happens. Of course, it might be one of those things that only work when you're not aiming at it. Like, most of the humor derived from a situation is seeing the foolishness, which you lose if you're aiming at it. A donkey in a tux that's saying "hey, look at me I'm so silly." isn't nearly as funny as a donkey in a tux saying "hey, look at how distinguished I am." So we'll see. I was in the middle of this conversation and then guests came for dinner so I had to stop for a bit and then go to bed. So I hope I haven't extended it past the sell-by date by extending it, but I do like to answer questions when they're asked. All part of the programming, you see.
