I think you are right that a distinction needs to be made. It is one thing
to say that theism can be practiced as a form of fascism and another to
equate the two. If we point out convincingly that a certain group of people
is practing Christianity in the way that Hitler practices Nazism, many
liberal theists will find common cause to criticize fundamentalism with us.
But if we say all religion is evil, we are helping create a coalition
between liberal theists and fascists. Liberal and moderate theists will then
defend the rights of Fundamentalists to belief crazy shit and make everyone
else's lives miserable. This seems to be the state of affairs right now in
response to the New Atheist's assault.
