"...a culture that supports the dominance of intellectual values over social values is absolutely superior to one that does not." (Pirsig, Lila, p.311)
. [Craig, previously] IMHO the 3 important questions that this quote raises are: 1) would a free culture that supports the dominance of intellectual values over social values be superior to an authoritarian culture that supports the dominance of intellectual values over social values; 2) would a free culture be more likely than an authoritarian culture to support the dominance of intellectual values over social values & 3) would a free culture support higher quality intellectual values than would an authoritarian culture. . [Andy] > "authoritarian" means somebody > is mandating adherence to static values by enforcing compliance with > some set of static codes. . [dmb] > I sincerely wonder if there is such a thing as an authoritarian > culture that supports intellectual dominance. . I demur. IMHO an authoritarian culture can be static or dynamic, support the intellectual over the social or not. Originally I wanted to generalize Pirsig's statements about Capitalism & Socialism, by considering free & authoritarian cultures. But now I see this doesn't work. What needs to be determined is what system has the highest quality intellectual support. There's no shortcut.
