What hypothetical? A great deal of this article is brief accounts of real
people and their experiences. The dedication to it says: "To my patients.
Through their suffering, so often excruciating, they have gradually
revealed a message full of meaning to me."

See what I've had a hard time wrapping my head around is that if suffering
is the problem, why would I want to purposely take a path of self induced
suffering (such as starving myself nearly to death) to evoke an experience
that in many cases results in excruciating suffering, like being locked up
in a mental institution and getting electroshock treatments? This is your
idea of good? Not mine. Go for it.
