Hi Marsha, What I do is treat the mind like some background noise, and refuse to get caught up in it. In this way I make it both benign and trivial. It can talk all it wants, but I don't have to pay attention. It is not me, but some workings of the brain. So, I say: "that's nice brain, but I am really not interested" and tune it out. It keeps going, but I have no idea what it is saying. Once I realized that the brain was on autopilot, it became easier for me.
I have heard it called Thinking but not Thinking. I call it thinking but not paying attention.
