In this post I will attempt to use the left brain, right brain paradigm to present an awareness of Quality which I posses. I will assume that this paradigm is already familiar to the reader, and will only briefly describe the model. I will then use the model to give an analysis of its relevance to MoQ.
Brain research and psychology have created a paradigm where the two hemispheres of the brain serve different purposes in our existence. In simplistic terms, the right brain is involved with the spatial aspects of incoming signal, while the left brain is concerned with acting on these signals in a structured manner. Other manners in describing the difference between hemispheres are: right brain-artistic, left brain-logical; right brain-Mythos, left brain-Logos; right brain-intuitive, left brain-intellectual, and so forth. There is that presentation on YouTube in which a brain scientist describes her left brain stroke. I cannot remember the title, but it has been discussed in this forum. There is communication between both spheres, but limited enough to make the assumption that both are autonomous to some degree. This communication means that each hemisphere can send and receive information, and that the sum total of this interaction is a synthesis of our awareness. Of course the presentation herein, is performed in words, and is therefore communicated in static packets. However, your reception of these words is converted to the right-left interaction once the meaning of the words is understood. Words deconstruct for the purpose of messaging, and then the receiver reconstructs them into awareness. Therefore outside of the words themselves, the thought process which ensues is enabled by both sides and not just the word and concept side. For the purposes of explaining Quality in metaphysical terms, Pirsig brings in the concepts of sq and DQ. Again, these concepts are communicated in words, and are by no means the thoughts Pirsig had to create such words. It is not a stretch to say that sq is left brain and that DQ is right brain. While this concordance can be logically challenged, it is simply an analogy for explaining my appreciation of Quality. So any disagreement simply points to the fact that I have not made a convincing presentation and should try harder with different words. As with any analogy it will not completely fit within the reader’s understanding of MoQ, but please treat this as my endeavor to provide some insight as to how I see Quality, before the words. If we read the books by Pirsig, we are taught that something is out of kilter with our current Western manner of interpreting things. This is most evident in the halls of philosophy, which spends much effort analyzing being. Because of the massive input we get in the form of words, psychology and its propagandist arm, the media, insist on continuing this misdirection. This can be seen as an imbalance of the left/right presentation of awareness. In the same way, it is an imbalance between how sq and DQ contribute to our personal awareness. I believe it is the intent of MoQ, to restore a balance that will lead to more harmony; create accordance out of discordance. Of course any metaphysics is Logos heavy and left brain dominant, so Pirsig cautions on this and recognizes that any metaphysics actually confines reality more than it explains it. It is therefore necessary not to get too involved in the logic behind MoQ for one to “understand” it. It is also necessary (again in my opinion) for one to not read what Pirsig has written too literally. For such literal translation is heavy on sq and can mislead. Lila is not a bible that we must follow unquestionably. It is a guide, with many trails. It is a gym with many springboards. It was not written to profess truths by which we should live. It was written as a cautionary tale from which we can learn. Lila is a parable and should be treated as such. We do not use quotes from Alice in Wonderland to demonstrate truth, but simply to demonstrate understanding. There is only one thing that needs balancing in the human awareness of Quality in my view. It was my intention to use this paradigm in order to present my feeling of what such balance is. What needs balancing can be presented in many ways, and this is but one. It of course uses the simplistic paradigm of a scale as is used in the Zodiac "Libra". Best to stay simple.
