Dan Glover stated July 31st 2013: > Marsha is too nice to say so, but this is one of the most chauvistically > racist posts I've ever read here (ad nauseum)...
Ant commented earlier: > My concern, above all, is the future intellectual quality of this > Discussion group. I'm sorry you saw my post to Marsha in the particular > light of chauvinism and racism but it was not meant to be taken that way. > I think if you asked Marsha herself, she would confirm to you, despite my > other faults, that I'm certainly not a racist and/or sexist. Dan: I did not say you were. I said your post smacked of it. Ant McWatt comments: Sounds like you're backtracking now, Dan. If I sincerely make racist remarks then I am a racist. People in the UK get sued for less for your smear of my character earlier. Dan continued: If you really care about the future intellectual quality of this forum you might want to quit classifying everyone according to gender and to their cultural backgrounds. Take the time to read their posts without judging the person behind the words. No one can biologically change what they are. But we can attend to becoming better people socially and intellectually. Ant McWatt comments: May I suggest you read my posts a little more carefully? The reference to gender etc. in the last paragraph of my post to Marsha was because precisely because I'm concerned with some of the flack she gets around here. She isn't a Nazi or child killer! As DMB noted just a couple of days ago that's the primary reason for why I've been careful not to say anything about Marsha's posts - until now. Dan continued: If you really cared about Marsha (and consequently this discussion group) posts like yours would be sent off-line and not publicly. Why shame her in front of everyone? Because she sent a few unadulterated quotes? Ant McWatt comments: No, you're completely wrong there, Dan. A few unadulterated quotes? There are hundreds of posts with uncommented quotes just from from Marsha alone in the MOQ Discuss archives. Usually absolute tedious reading which have little to do with intellectual DISCUSSION. I've also discussed this type of issue with Marsha a number of times over the last two or three years - off-line. It's just a pity she decided not to take my off-line advice. Dan continued: I agree it is nice when people add their own commentary to quotes but she is not the only person here to do this. I don't see you getting on them about it. Ant McWatt comments: It's nicer still if they don't swamp the Archives with loads of uncommented quotes. Moreover, you don't see me "getting on" with anyone else about this trait because Marsha is the biggest "quoter" on Discuss by far. As I said previously, you don't get thrown off this Discussion group for boring someone else senseless! Dan continued: Maybe she didn't feel embarrassed and maybe she knows you are not a chauvinist. I don't know. I didn't ask her nor am I going to ask. Ant McWatt comments: Well, Mr Glover, you've put those statements on Discuss publically so you might as well have written to her personally and asked her! Dan continued: I know what I read and I know how I would feel if someone talked to me like that. Ant McWatt comments: Well good for you, Dan. We can all rest that much easier knowing that. Anyway, as regards Marsha, I just hope she takes on what I said in good faith and, just as importantly, acts on it. Dan continued: If I am out of line, then so be it. Ant McWatt comments: Well, you are just giving me the impression that you've just taken the "wrong end of the stick" at least partly because you don't always read other people's posts as carefully as you should. (Ask Paul Turner about the latter - regarding his conversation with you about his Two Contexts essay - if you don't believe me). Ant commented earlier: > Thank you for your opinion anyway. At least it shows you care about this > matter. Dan continued: I care about this discussion group too. I get frustrated with folk here many times and upon reflection I probably say things I would rather I didn't. Ant McWatt comments: OK, I suppose we can agree on this last point at least.
