John said to Ian:
To be perfectly honest, I snagged the definition from Wiki on Philosophical
Realism and substituted SOM for the term everywhere it appeared in the wiki
article. My aim, as you can imagine, was to get some feedback on the idea that
SOM and Philosophical Realism are one and the same. Are they?

dmb says:
No, they are not the same. SOM is much broader and includes all Modern
philosophies. The rationalists and idealists put all the emphasis on the
subjective side while the empiricists and realists put the emphasis on the
objective side. If you're going to plagiarize a definition from Wikipedia,
you'd get much closer to SOM by stealing the Wikipedia article on dualism,
particularly Cartesian dualism or ontological dualism.

You can simply declare that you understand, John, or you can show your
understanding by saying something about it that makes sense. I realize that
this requirement for you to actually know things is tyrannical and oppressive
for a free-spirit like yourself but that's just how the game is played. Unless
this is all just typing practice or something, you really should try to
understand the concepts being discussed or remain silent.
