Horse, Horse writes: Most people, including many on this mailing list, still see Morality in terms of what they've been taught from birth and fail to see the potential of a new Quality-centred ethical system. Horse, I have slowly come to the conclusion that what Pirsig means by Quality is that it is an overarching force that applies to the entire history of the universe and that Quality is responsible for the evolution of the universe as we understand it today. Before human sentience came into being in the universe the operation of Quality was invariably good and was the guiding force for universal evolution. I view inorganic Quality as still operating in the inorganic universe today-still all good. I view sentient Quality as an offshoot of inorganic Quality that resulted from the normal progress of evolution. When sentient Quality came into being then Dynamic Quality came under the influence of human sentience and became capable of generating either good or evil depending on our individual interpretation of any given situation. This, of course, also appeared in Static Quality so that it became possible for our interpretation of Value (and Quality, and the good) to be at variance with the operation of inorganic Quality. The possibility of evil had appeared. In accordance with Pirsig's conception of the "individual Truths" idea then each human had the capability of pursueing individual paths depending on their personal history and immediate influences. The paths could take as many directions (good or evil or all shades in between) as there were humans. As I view Pirsig's concept, the collective path of sentient Quality is self correcting and will eventually come into line with Universal Quality. When this eventually occurs then the operation of Quality will produce all good again. I view the levels as being unnecessary complications which operate to the detriment of our understanding of Quality. They encourage us to view our position in the universe in isolation instead of viewing Quality as a seamless whole that is a function of the entire universe.
