the way we live our lives???
This seems to me just another way of asking "Philosophy: Who needs it?".
The
best answer I've found so far is one by Ayn Rand:
..."Most men spend their days struggling to evade three questions, the
answers
to which underlie man's every thought, feeling and action whether he is
consciously aware of it of not: Where am I? How do I know it? What should I
do?..... There is only one science that can answer them: philosophy.
---
it seems to me that philosphy is a way of avoiding these questions while
making yourself believe you are trying to answer them.
where am i? .... where i percieve myself to be, the only things to disagree
with this are other people, but why is there opinion more valid than mine?
it is not.
how do i know it? .... it's the only reality i know
so what should i do about it? ... accept it and make the best of it. not
everything can be answered and there is no such thing as truth, just do the
things THAT MAKE SENCE TO YOU!
why do you need such intense philosophical arguments to do that? when you
are unfit, do you start exercising and looking at how to make yourself
healthier or do you read book and books about the human body and how it
functions right down to the level of understanding genetics while at no time
making an attempt to pass on what he learns to the way he lives his life? i
rest my case.
---
many find adoption and practice of a religious dogma a perfectly acceptable
and rewarding way to guide their lives, others do not, seeking instead a
more
"conscious, rational process." In the end the process is not as important as
the quality it manifests in your life.
---
i'm not religious and dont see religion as an answer. i see the question of
life requiring a pragmatic answer, and philosophy as it appears in most
places doesnt appear to be this. the beauty of pirsigs writing as i see it,
is it can be easily translated into a pragmatic way of thinking. that is
his true genius. i dont think it does him justice to simply look at the
deep philosophical implications of what he said without considering what it
ACTUALLY means to the only reality we all know ... the reality that is US.
just my view
regards
rich.
