PH:
Yes, NonZero definitely goes on my “must read” list, too. I wasn’t familiar
with game theory but now feel I have a good grasp of it after reading
Wright’s
lucid text. His explanation of new levels arising out old complements the
MoQ. Although he is well grounded in scientific approach to evolution, his
openness to ideas outside the conventional scientific envelope was
surprising, and in my view, heartening.

RP:
I stumbled upon an old, overly-pretentious post that I wrote in Nov. 1998
called "Morality Chart" where I tried to use the MOQ to objectively evaluate
quality event interactions. I now recognize several traps that make the
entire thing seem quaint, but one thing that stood out was how much I
stressed SYNERGY as what creates new pattern levels out of the old. Somehow
I lost that insight, or at least it became more unfocused in my awareness.
Non Zero lays it out with total clarity. Non zero sum outcomes are what
Pirsig means by higher quality patterns.

PH:
I don’t know about you, but when I read a book of this quality I check off
sentences or paragraphs in the margins that I like or think important for one
reason or another as I come to them. Then, after finishing the book I put it
aside for a month or so, then go back to look at the passages I checked.
Those that still appeal I’ll copy into a notebook for possible future
reference.
Over the years I’ve collected five 3-ring notebooks full of excerpts like
this
from numerous sources. The purpose? Just to keep a record of what
interested me in the past, sort of an idea autobiography to amuse me in my
old age.

RP:
Me too! I highlight every book I read and re-read the highlights as often as
needed until I absorb the material. In the margins I write notes, and on the
blank pages and on the cover I relate the book to my other readings. I used
to write in a binder too, but have discontinued that with my joining this
forum a few years ago. I do want to get back to synthesis and summary of my
thoughts soon, though.

You know I am a big fan of your work too, especially since you are one of the
members who evolve (this is the key to me -- after a year or so, you can tell
who participates to evolve, and who participates to avoid evolving. The line
is REAL blurry day-to-day, but crystal-clear over the years.)

PH:
But I see I have much more to read, thanks to your sharing your ‘must read’
list. The so called “real world” is incredibly dull compared to intellectual
quality to be found “out there” in books recommended by discerning guides.

RP:
There is so much more to be gained by importing other influences into the MOQ
framework. I wish we could do more of this.
