Hi Ron Yes it's a personal preference. I dislike firearms; I've never owned one. As far as being eaten, I guess there's all kinds of bad things that could happen out there. Smashing into a guardrail at 60 mph would probably be a bad thing too. Still, if it happens, it happens. One can hide out hoping death will miss them or get out there and live. It's all a personal choice.
If you've ever been around animals you know they have a "pecking order" much like human beings. They say to act "big" if you encounter a wild animal. On the other hand, if it's a mother who has young ones nearby acting big will only infuriate her. So it's a judgement call. It's best to avoid them altogether, imo. I walk toe to heel rather than heel to toe which allows me to be extremely quiet as I move. And I am constantly scanning the entire area in a 180 degree span. I never look at anything directly but rather indirectly with my eyes crossed just a bit so I notice even the slightest movement well before I encounter danger. There's many more tricks that I've learned over the years. I have no death wish. When I say I go there to die, I mean that the person who walks into those mountains isn't the same person who walks out. But you know that already. Thanks for writing, Dan Dan, You know the woods well, while I'm not big on the smoke pole either it is rather handy when respected. I move through the woods slow, four step stop, ball of the foot too but, I have to admit, I've been surprised by a few critters, Most can smell you before they see you And when they're surprised too there's no tellin what they'll do, I respect them , I assume nothing When I'm on their ground. I have seen animals with mange and rabies that act nothing like what they're supposed To, hell Dan, just worried about ya. All I'm sayin is it Might be a good idea to carry a walkin stick.. Hey, better yet, one of those anti mugging "personal alarms" would do the trick , It's always nice to have an Ace up your sleeve. hope you carry a field aid kit too, sheesh, I'm sounding like your mother, I'll stop. -in the spirit of the mountain P.s. can't blame us for try'n to get you out on two wheels again all we're sayin is " come risk your Life with US sometime!" -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dan Glover Sent: Wednesday, February 07, 2007 12:03 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MD] Clouds Hello everyone >From: "Ron Kulp" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: <[email protected]> >Subject: Re: [MD] Clouds >Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2007 08:11:49 -0500 > >Dan, >I'm a Sunday rider mostly, I'm fortunate enough to live close to open >farmland, those mornings are that Little Piece of the mountain, the >danger is about equal, like you I tread with caution, a subtle heads up >Game, but I seldom walk in the wildernes without atleast a good stick, >I carry a hunk of teakwood and a buck Knife, nothing serious, but you >never know, it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and >not have it. >I encountered a pack of dogs and they tree'd me. lucky for me a few >deer stirred up and they took off after them The idea of being eaten >alive is a rough one..I usually carry a side arm If I'm "really" out >there.
