Hi Ron Yes it's a personal preference. I dislike firearms; I've never owned one. As far as being eaten, I guess there's all kinds of bad things that could happen out there. Smashing into a guardrail at 60 mph would probably be a bad thing too. Still, if it happens, it happens. One can hide out hoping death will miss them or get out there and live. It's all a personal choice. If you've ever been around animals you know they have a "pecking order" much like human beings. They say to act "big" if you encounter a wild animal. On the other hand, if it's a mother who has young ones nearby acting big will only infuriate her. So it's a judgement call. It's best to avoid them altogether, imo. I walk toe to heel rather than heel to toe which allows me to be extremely quiet as I move. And I am constantly scanning the entire area in a 180 degree span. I never look at anything directly but rather indirectly with my eyes crossed just a bit so I notice even the slightest movement well before I encounter danger. There's many more tricks that I've learned over the years. I have no death wish. When I say I go there to die, I mean that the person who walks into those mountains isn't the same person who walks out. But you know that already.
