Platt, You are correct I should have inserted something like "the journals..." I thought this was clear from the context of the sentence but it never pays to overestimate the audience, as you say.

I'm saying that someone who writes Nature and assumes the reader will know the word refers to a magazine is out of touch with his readers. Same with the word Science. Both are terms that commonly refer to atoms, animals, jungles, mountains and the like (Nature) and a method of investigating how things are got together to create the world we see (Science).
