[David M] But more recently is has become obvious that very few forms of behaviour are law like and can be described as determined.
[Case] How is this at all obvious? Where is this multitude of unlawful activity? Scientific laws are now seen as probabilistic and determinism no longer translates into predictive success. But this does not throw open the gates to anarchy. [David M] And even if things are like like, how did these laws become established? Were the laws chosen in some sense? [Case] Seems to me physics address "how" pretty well. Why? Now that's another story. [David M] There really is no way to say what determines behaviour when observed from the outside. Is it without intention or choice or is it lawlike and mechnical? If someone or something is very consistent in their behaviour you could presume a zombie or robot but you may be wrong. [Case] Hence any statement you make about lawlike behavior is probabilistic. The level of confidence in such a law increases with each observation or goes away all together. [David M] Thirdly, some behaiours do seem open but entirely random.
