Steve,

Just to chime in hear, I noodle around on the guitar. While I do get a
charge out of gear reviews and fine performances, it has never once occurred
to me that I am playing badly so I can better appreciate people who play
well.

I play because I like playing. I do not play for others to hear. I am
usually asked to stop when they do. I don't play songs. I just play. That's
about as close to Zazen as I get but I do it because I like the feeling of
doing it. I have listened to every street musician I have ever passed and
wondered if I could make a buck or two with a new set of stings and an old
hat.

I think people would become more passionate for music or any of the arts, if
they did it for the fun of it instead of worrying about becoming Hendrix, or
Brian Setzer or Picasso or Hemmingway or Brando or Henry Moore.

Case

------------------------------------------------
Art as experience. I think the act of producing art helps one to
appreciate "high-quality" art. I think I appreciate people like
Hilary Hahn, Jascha Heifitz, Itzhak Perlman, etc.. because of my own
experiences playing the violin. I appreciate people like Victor
Wooten, Flea, John Paul Jones, etc.. because of my own experiences
playing bass guitar. Therefore, instead of "lack of educated taste,"
people would probably appreciate art if they experienced how hard it
is to make art themselves.

Random thought,
Steve H

P.S. Bear with me if I'm mixing threads here or if this point has been
made already, haven't read these in a while.
