Hi All,
The 24 hour cable news outlets are filled wall-to-wall with the saga of
Paris Hilton and her troubles with the law. Among the literati there is
much hurrumphing at the attention paid to this brainless twit compared
to all the "serious" issues the country faces such as global warming,
immigration reform, and income disparity to mention a few receiving a
profuse amount of left-wing media puffery.
In Lila, Chp. 20, Pirsig explains why the Paris Hilton saga overrides
other "more important" issues. He explains how celebrity "... becomes an
organizing force of the whole social level of evolution. Without this
celebrity force, advanced complex human societies might be impossible.
Even simple ones."
The nation may be divided on the "important" issues, but unites around
Paris Hilton's notoriety. Her shenanigans and those of the upholders of
the law in Los Angeles is the subject of a national conversation.
Thanks Paris for bringing us all together. Our country's evolution is
assured. :-)
Best,
Platt
