REPLY TO: book review "Morphometrics with R"

Hi,
I have had the pleasure of using this book for my master's work, and I can honestly say that the program "R" is extremely useful for any kind of statistical work. Julien has produced a very clear, well-written guide to using R for morphometric work. Once one gets past the initial fear of using programming language, the actual user-friendliness of R allows you to perform most kinds of statistical analyses, even if you've never tried them before! You can perform cluster analyses, create TPS grids, perform ANOVAs, combine molecular and morphometric data, perform any number of regression, correlation and least squares analyses; most of which are detailed in Julien's book. The use of only one program for all of your analyses saves alot of time, and the use of R in morphometrics allows you to present your data in EXACTLY the way that you want it; thus you can produce figures which are publishable right off the bat!

This book is a fantastic guide to morphometrics, and I would encourage anyone working with morphometrics to try it!

Kind regards,
Shelley

Hi,
I use this book to add R applications in my morphometrics toolbox.
It is very detailed, comprehensive, convenient and intelligible (even
for someone like me who is not fluent in the R language)

there is a very good introduction on morphometrics and on R,
a chapter on "how to deal with data with R" (how to generate data, how
to input your dataset, how to test for measurement error...)
a part on statistics on your dataset (descriptive statistics,
univariate, multivariate...) that is very clear and useful
a geometric morphometrics based on landmarks part with 2D and 3D
appliactions (superimposition, TPS, EDMA,...)
an other chapter for outline analysis (open outline, fourier and eigenshape)
a chapter on how to deal with your morphometrics results (explore shape
space, analysis of variance, morphometrics and phylogeny....)
and a last chapter called "going further with R" that I don’t really use
for the moment.

There is a lot of applications in each part of each chapter so that you
can try and test everything on data that you generate or on you dataset.
there is some exercises at the end of each chapter that make you very
well understand what you have to do and how to do it.

Thus, you can only use R for your morphometrics study. I honestly don't
do everything with R, I bought this book for very precise things that I
could not do with other software, but I now use R when it is easier, or
clearer that other softwares.

today (thanks to you) I realize that I have a lot of R scripts and that
I finally do a lot of things with it. And I am sure Julien's book is
responsible for that!

Regards

Sebastien
