Dear Luis,

The Microscribe is small enough to fit in the overhead
compartments of all but the very smallest planes. The HARD
CASE that Immesion sells, however, is too big for carry-on
(although it may very well fit into some compartments if
you can get it on board). Therefore, a number of people
have purchased a wheeled Porter Case or even a large
backpack for transport. Stuffed with the original
Microscribe packing, these provide sufficient protection as
carry-on luggage.

Another consideration, however, is whether airline and
security officials will allow the Microscribe on the plane.
Many airlines have strict weight limits for carry-on and a
Microscribe+Porter Case usually exceeds these. It is for
this reason that I switched to a backpack. I have also been
stopped by the (U.S.) Transportation Security
Administration and told that I could not bring the
Microscribe on board because it was both bludgeon-like AND
spear-like. This has only ever happened once (in Texas),
but is a potential risk.

The people at Immersion insist that, properly packed in the
HARD CASE, the Microscribe is safe to travel as checked
baggage. In fact, the point man for Microscribe sales says
that he frequently checks the Microscibe and has had no
problems. However, I do not fully trust this, mostly
because I have known people who worked as baggage handlers.
But, I am not aware of anyone who has done before/after
tests to determine if checking a Microscribe reduces its
accuracy.

Hope this helps and good luck,

Kieran

Dear list members,

What I would like to ask is practical question regarding
the air trips with
the Microscribe - do you know if I can travel with it in
the plane cabin or must I transport it like common luggage?
And in this case
is it safe (for the device)?

Best regards

Luis
