Maybe this reference may be useful (old, but interesting): Jackson, J.F., Ingram III, W. & Campbell, H.W. (1976). The dorsal pigmentation of snakes as an anti-predator strategy: a multivariate approach. American Naturalist, 110, 1029-1053. Here is a more recent reference that compares patterns in shell ornamentation of tropical marine gastropods using GM techniques (Fourier analysis): Roy, K., Balch, D.P. & Hellberg, M.E. (2001).
