Dear Dean,

I have succesfully installed the latest version of geomorph from GitHub
using R 3.1.3 with devtools/Rtools (both of which I had already installed).

I would like to emphasize to other users what you have already pointed out
-- it is absolutely essential to install not only the R devtools package,
but also Rtools (which is not a R package, but a set of software
development tools, including the GNU C compiler that is required for
compiling packages installed from source, as those from GitHub).

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
