I have just uploaded ver. 1.19 of tpsTri to the SB morphometrics server. Relatively small changes.
I revised and added new items to the menu in the 'sample scatter' window that displays the random sample of shapes in terms of a superimposition with variation around each landmark. I clarified that the default superimposition is onto the reference configuration - even though the mean of the sample corresponds to the target configuration. I have added a menu item that will easily let a user set the reference equal to the target. I have also updated the help file to reflect these changes and to add some commentary (similar to that given in the next paragraph). By experimenting with target configurations rather distant from the reference you can verify that doing so can generate apparent covariation patterns at each landmark even though the simulated data are generated with equal circular scatter at each landmark. This will illustrate another reason why one does not want to use a reference configuration of landmarks that is very distant from the mean configuration. Thanks to Fred Bookstein for a comment he made that led me to look at the default options used in this window of the tpsTri program. Thanks also to the Institute for Anthropology at the Univ. of Vienna for the stimulating environment where I am visiting at the moment. It has been a couple of years since the last update of this program. I would appreciate suggestions that would make it more useful. ------------------------------------------------- F.
