I have the Comprehension Toolkit and have used it. I'm using it again this year.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the whole point of using "Saving Beauty" was for the students to see an adult model their thinking as they read through a difficult piece of adult text. I don't think the kids are particularly meant to understand the piece, but instead...they are to focus and notice my struggle and use of strategies. In fact, I tell my students they may not understand what I'm reading about and that's OK. They are to just notice my struggle and what strategies I use to comprehend. If the students fully understood the piece, I think they would be distracted by their own thoughts of the piece. I like the Stealing Beauty lesson. My students love this lesson.they have the best time watching me struggle and use strategies and they can point out what I did to help myself comprehend. I teach 5th grade and my students have never been exposed to this method of using strategies before they come to my classroom.
