Janet Allen who works with middle and high school teachers uses a  
very similar strategy called "book pass." She does have one book for  
student, gives them one or two minutes to look over the book, and  
then the students rate the book. The amount of time depends on how  
long your block is. I've used it with middle school classes to great  
reviews from both teachers and students.
