Rosie--
I am behind on my emails and I do not know what kind of response you
have already gotten--but I just had to respond.

You are right! There is not point of the weekly fluency checks--that
is--no point UNLESS you are using the information you have gained about
the children's reading styles and struggles to inform your instruction.
The point of the fluency checks is so that you can figure out that
Susie struggles with derivational endings and Johnny can decode the
words but because his expression and non-use of punctuation tells you
that he doesn't understand what he is reading. That way you can taylor
your guided reading instruction to their needs.

Now I agree that once a week--you are not going to see major gains.
But, if you use the information you get from the fluency checks to
drive your instruction you will see positive gains over time.
