I need some advice. Have a former grad student whose high school (under pressure from the district) is considering dropping all novels from the curriculum in favor of short stories. While I know the value of using short stories to model and teach strategies, and I certainly value short stories in their own right, it seems to the two of us that this move is about #1 raising test scores and #2 allowing for better control of teachers by pacing them with teacher guides and a ³program² of sorts. Does anyone have information on research in this regard and/or a source for theoretical discussion of this issue that we can use in making an argument against this move?
I would especially love if Ellin or Ginger would chime in on this topic. I know what my gut instinct is....and it's partly because of my theoretical understandings but also because of my guess as to the ideological source of the move. Thanks in advance.
