I need some advice. Have a former grad student whose high school (under
pressure from the district) is considering dropping all novels from the
curriculum in favor of short stories. While I know the value of using short
stories to model and teach strategies, and I certainly value short stories
in their own right, it seems to the two of us that this move is about #1
raising test scores and #2 allowing for better control of teachers by pacing
them with teacher guides and a ³program² of sorts.

Does anyone have information on research in this regard and/or a source for
theoretical discussion of this issue that we can use in making an argument
against this move?

I would especially love if Ellin or Ginger would chime in on this topic. I
know what my gut instinct is....and it's partly because of my theoretical
understandings but also because of my guess as to the ideological source of
the move.

Thanks in advance.

Sally Thomas
