I just finished Kylene Beers book about teaching reading to adolescent students. Having done so, I am convinced inference can be taught with darned near anything. She talked about taking simple passages and even taking inference down to determining who or what the pronouns refer to. Even though her book is marketed 6-12, I would recommend it as strong reading for anyone interested in picking up some additional strategies for teaching strategies.
