I have to say the hottest book right now is Marley: A Dog Like No Other by John Grogan. Although it was originally written as an adult book, the author has created an adaptation for ages 8-12. It is wonderful! I read aloud a chapter called "The Things He Ate" to 5th graders yesterday and they ALL wanted to check it out! It is a must have for grades 4-8. I would estimate the reading level as about 4th grade. I would also recommend adding Owen and Mzee. It is the story of the friendship that has developed between an orphaned baby hippo and a tortoise. It is heartwarming! There's a sequel as well.
Have fun!
