I like to tell kids that they can look in 3 places to infer. They can look at 
1. description 2. character actions and 3. character dialogue.  I have found 
that looking at these 3 and asking students to "think off the page" has helped 
to make inferring more concrete. One of my favorite Read Alouds for modeling is 
"The Other Side" by Jaqueline Woodson. If you're looking for a slightly shorter 
piece for modeling on the overhead, use "Stray" a short story from Every Living 
Thing by Cynthia Rylant. I'd be interested to know how it goes.
