I have had great success with having students (grades 1, 2 & 3) work
collaboratively to write their own readers' theater scripts. It's a great
comprehension exercise and one works to establish what are essential elements,
etc.
The first couple of times we do it in small group with heavy guidance. I
withdraw the guidance and they can, in time, do it themselves. It can be
come
part of a writing workshop with all those benefits in terms of creativity and
mechanics. They also learn about not copying word for word but writing the
script in their own words. The fluency building is great as they read and
reread to make sure they've got what they want. When the scripts are
finished,
I type them in conventional spelling/mechanics and make the scripts available
for all the students in the class.
