I have not read Atwell's book....however, this seems to be the approach I abandoned when I found MOT and others. So, I can only speak from experience. There are times when students need to be just lost in the "zone", and there are times when I need to read aloud just to read aloud. However, when I look at the success with teaching them how to think, using some of my read aloud to specifically teach that and some of their reading to practice it, I can not abandon it. It works, and it is that simple. Like we have heard in the past, comprehension is not caught, it truly does need to be taught. Terry/Fl
